For the third time, the Topanga
Historical Society (THS) has mined the history of Lower Topanga for a
presentation entitled, “Three Surf Filmmakers,” for its first quarterly event
of 2018 on Wendesday, February 21, at the Topanga Community House.
Three generations of filmmakers who
lived at Topanga Beach helped define the surf film genre: Grant Rohloff (Men Who Ride Mountains, 1963), Hal
Jepsen (Cosmic Children, 1970) and
Scott Dittrich (Fluid Drive, 1974).
Local historian, Pablo Capra, has
edited together their previously unseen Topanga Beach footage from the ‘60s and
‘70s into a short documentary [called Topanga Style] about the houses, parties, Nude Beach, floods,
fires, and catamarans of the surfing lifestyle. Guests Scott Dittrich and Grant’s
son, Chris Rohloff, will add live commentary throughout the video presentation.
The book, Topanga Beach Snake Pit, by Chris Rohloff and Pablo Capra, will be
available for purchase at the event, as will The Topanga Story (new expanded edition) for $49 – just in time for
giving on Valentine’s Day and Easter.
Potluck starts at 7 p.m. Bring your
best dish and a favorite beverage to share. THS will provide organic decaf
coffee, hot tea, and lemon water. The program begins at 8 p.m.
